Today, most countries adhere to one of two legal systems: the Common Law system or the Civil Law system. The Common Law system originated in medieval England and was implemented in various British colonies across different continents. Meanwhile, the Civil Law system emerged concurrently in continental Europe and was applied in the colonies of European colonial powers such as Spain and Portugal. Additionally, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, countries like Russia and Japan, which previously had distinct legal traditions, adopted the Civil Law system to reform their legal systems and achieve economic and political parity with Western European nations.
